Architecture usually arises somewhere between who we are and who we would like to be. Perhaps this is why the most interesting phenomena in architecture are born right after the great breakthroughs, on the wave of enthusiasm and spectacular projections of the future. The twentieth century was full of such events. Architecture - both understood as creating an environment for everyday life, and as a large-scale set intended to be the foundation of national identity - each time played a huge role in creating contemporary times. The 100th anniversary of regaining independence is a great opportunity a look at the three key moments of the twentieth century history of Poland. The years 1918, 1945 and 1989 brought immense changes in every aspect. Although the buildings of the new authorities, houses of the new society and temples of new art emerging from these three periods of Polish history fundamentally differed, they had one thing in common - faith in the possibility of building a new world, different from the previous one. Looking at the moments following the breakthroughs, observing not only completed buildings, but also following the plans of those that have never been created and examining the accompanying media messages, we will try to outline the aspirations and transformations of Polish architecture of the last century.
