Join us for a meeting concerning the Gropius Granary, a listed historical landmark in urgent need of conservation. The guests of the meeting will be Joanna Klass and Wojciech Sząszor from the Warsaw Bauhaus collective, the conversation will be moderated by Marek Sztark.
In May 2021, the Warsaw Bauhaus collective, which had been active for over ten years, took custody of Walter Gropius’ first architectural project- a 1906 historic granary in Jankowo Pomorskie. Over the past two years, Joanna Klass and Wojtek Sząszor have invited a group of specialists with whom they are creating an organic plan for the preservation of the building and the revitalization of its surroundings. It will include both thorough architectural renovation and adaptation, as well as cultural, social and educational activities taking place around the heritage site.
Warsaw Bauhaus is guided by the thoughts of the granary’s architect:- Good architecture should be a reflection of life itself, and that means a thorough knowledge of biological, social, technical and artistic issues. The collective invites you to discuss participatory activities around the granary as part of the Eco Domś Expo project, which aims to create an outdoor exhibition area for project designs, prototypes and models of sustainable, modular and ecological architecture. The main core of the talk will be the Gropius Granary, a listed building in urgent need of conservation. The history of the building and its significance for the international arts community will be discussed. Joanna and Wojtek will talk about the collaborative process of architectural revitalization and the socio-cultural context of their activities around the Granary. They will also share information about open calls for projects carried out by the collective, as well as historical and architectural inspirations of Bauhaus, Black Mountain College, Werkbund Exhibitions and the 1932Tani Dom Własny Tani Dom WłasnyTani Dom WłasnyTani Dom Własny exhibition.
Organizers:
Warsaw Bauhaus is a living and constantly changing organism active in many fields of art. Our foundation creates and engages in events at the intersection of visual arts, architecture, historic preservation, design, performance, dance and theater. We operate in a collective and social way. As a team of artists, cultural animators and curators, we create situations whose core is embedded in a social and historical context. Our practice is based on conscious openness and transparency of activities. We take a long-term approach to the activities we prepare, allowing an organic development of curatorial work. In this way, we manage to achieve a space and time through which art and architecture find new ways of dialogue with the public, allowing them to co-create artistic events.
