“Architecture in a nutshell” series

Grade 7–8

A series of two-hour classes devoted to the history of architectural styles.

Each workshop is accompanied by educational activities for students, which can be downloaded from the Educational materials tab. The tab also contains class presentations together with descriptions and suggestions of other workshops that can be done at school. Ancient architecture

During the lesson participants learn the most important monuments of ancient Greece and Rome and learn to distinguish architectural orders. In the workshop part, together they create the model of a Greek temple in the Ionic order.

Lesson duration: about 2 hours.

Romanesque architecture

The participants learn about the characteristics of the Romanesque style, build a model of the collegiate church in Tum near Leczyca from wooden blocks and models of medieval castles from cardboard.

Gothic architecture

During the lesson participants learn about the characteristics of the Gothic style and create models of medieval gargoyles from cardboard.

Lesson duration: about 2 hours.

Renaissance architecture

During the lesson participants learn about the characteristics of Renaissance architecture and the definition of golden ratio. In the workshop part, together they create an imitation of a coffered ceiling.

Lesson duration: about 2 hours.

Baroque architecture

During the lesson participants learn about the characteristics of Baroque architecture. The message is facilitated by the use of Memo educational game. The workshop accompanying the talk takes the form of an experiment showing the hard work of a fresco painter. The students learn, among other things, drawing reproduction techniques on a practical level.

Lesson duration: about 2 hours.

Architecture of the nineteenth century

During the lesson participants learn about the characteristics features of classicist and neo-Gothic architecture and play “Grand Tour” board game. During the workshop part, each participant creates a classicist or neo-Gothic palace from a cardboard box, using reproduced architectural details cut from cardboard.

Lesson duration: about 2 hours.

How people lived in the past?

An interactive museum lesson, during which participants learn on selected examples about Polish Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and nineteenth century architecture. The students are divided into groups; each group receives a folder with records and documents relating to one historical figure. Using source texts, architectural plans and photographs, the students are intended to present their figure to their classmates, describe the person’s home and the style in which it was furnished. Please note that this lesson is best preceded by other lessons from the “Architecture in a nutshell” series!
