As an independent sign in the city space, the letter W appears already in the 15th century, initially only on stamps and coins. In 1530, it was given its place in the coat of arms of Wrocław (double V) as the initial of the oldest name of the city (Wratislavia) and the legendary founder of the castle - Wrocisław. With time, he became more and more boldly independent and his style evolves. In the history of Wrocław, it holds firm, annoying only the Nazis, who, getting rid of the traces of the city’s past, establish a new two-field coat of arms for it. In the post-war period, the letter W becomes one of the elements used by the authorities to symbolically tame the “Regained Territories” as the Slavic indigenous ones. The initial W marks Wrocław buildings and bridges, and appears on the cornerstones of new and renovated buildings. It appears on the packaging of first-needed products, such as cigarettes, soap or flour.
