The concept of the Lexicon of Greenery of Wrocław is to show the variety of “objects” of the city’s greenery in historical and artistic terms, as well as in terms of nature, mainly botanical. The publication presented to you is a work in which an attempt was made to combine the results of research by representatives of many fields of science. It is also a postulate to treat such a comprehensive understanding of greenery as a field requiring the cooperation of representatives of humanities, natural sciences and science. Hence, among more than one hundred authors - apart from historians, art historians, cultural scientists, botanists, zoologists and farmers - there are philologists, literary historians, musicologists, as well as representatives of creative circles: architects and landscape architects. The lexicon is supposed to be an appeal for a holistic treatment of this very difficult and multi-faceted substance. Great credit should be given to authors who were able and willing to use their previous knowledge to popularize this issue.

The result is a publication which is a kind of mosaic. It contains numerous individual slogans of alleys, gardens, parks, walking areas, but also vast forests and river valleys. The presence of artefacts, endangered and protected species, natural monuments and dendrological peculiarities are taken into account. Many green areas do not yet have their own individual slogans - they are waiting for researchers who will be looking into their history, composition and contemporary functions in the future.
